Ya gotta read those Terms of Services folks
In the TIVO terms of service it states that it does collect information of what is watched. Supposedly it is annonymous. There is an opt out clause in their TOS.

Now having said that. What is all the hoopla about? Hasn't anyone ever checked their credit history to see who is checking on you? There are companies querying "your private" information all the time to send you more slow mail spam for credit cards etc. On a side note if there are "too many" queries you can actually be turned down for a loan. With a small amount of information that can be skimmed from your county courthouse anyone can see your credit info.

Go to the county courthouse and do a search for all the information with your name on it that can be looked at by anyone. Many major cites have web sites that allow a person to type in your home address and find out how much your house is worth on the tax rolls and what the amount of taxes paid are. You will be amazed what is available to anyone.

When I read the paranoid rants in ZDNET Talkback about John Ashcroft requesting greater abilities to "spy" I just quietly chuckle. With a little footwork, research and maybe a bit of dumpster diving (are you sure that where you purchase your prescriptions is shredding their records with your info on it?) anyone can profile you. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Privacy in this technological society is a pipe dream that slipped away years ago. Information is the coin of the realm. Ya gotta read them Terms of Service.

Well I am going to slink back into my hermetically sealed, tin foil surrounded, Y2k stocked bunker and get off this insecure internet. My batteries need to be recharged by wind machine and I gotta make sure my water well is still functioning. It gets lonely here in the mountains.
