Macs have nothing to do with it..
For this project, it didn't matter what processors or OS was being used (I'll bet the actual Mac OS was used very little.. the most important software would be that to connect the machines together and get them to talk to each other - which I doubt the Mac OS provides)

A cluster is a large number of low cost systems pieced together to provide a high level of computing performance on the cheap..

The people who should be scared are the IBMs and Crays that sell traditional mainframe supercomputers.. their only advantage now is probably that it's easier to diagnose and fix problems on a mainframe super computer as opposed to a cluser..
