Who mentioned Microsoft? Not me.
"sounds to me like it was poor planning by Google for using off the shelf x86 boxes"

Since their site seems to be mostly Linux, they can easliy transition to nearly any chip architecture they like - SPARC, PowerPC, whatever. They can migrate a few boxes at a time as part of a normal replacement cycle. Had they chosen Windows, they'd be sweating on just Intel or AMD. Where's the bad planning in that?

"I'd rather they didn't, just like you and the rest of your "community" don't want MS to expand theirs"

What 'community' is that? Why so defensive? You had a go at Google for no good reason (how is forecasting a possible problem that is some years in the future bad planning?) then when questioned about it you think I'm bashing Microsoft.

Guess I'd be paranoid too if everyone was out to get me...
