Did they really blow it?
If InHell had just decided to make a great server chip, they might have pulled it off. It was the wasted time devoted to creating an x86 backward compatability that delayed the chip so long. In any event, EPIC is a brand new architecture in a market that loves 20 year old backward compatability x86s. EVERY other chip is a nitche chip - so why can't Itanic find its nitche? Even if its limited to JUST replacing the PA-RISC (the original intent), HP will be (kinda) happy.

Software development lags Hardware. Look at how long it took M$ to make a decent Windoze. It would behoove InHell to partner with GCC and have them write the compiler (greasing the skids by providing free Itanic machines). Now THAT would be a challenge for compiler writers! Just the thing to get people interested in an open-source project . . .
