Perhaps you are the one that is wrong
Your whole argument rests on the ability of a compiler to live up to your expectations. In the 10 years that the Itanium has existed I haven't heard of any stellar compilers for the Itanium as of yet. Have you? Intel makes a decent x86 compiler, if they can't make a decent compiler for the Itanium then it is unrealistic to expect someone else to produce it.

>Never mind that it will take another 10 years
In ten years we might not be using silicon. 10 years is an eon in Computer-land. I believe that it is possible that the computing industry may be moving in an entirely different direction in 10 years which may make the entire Itanium architecture irrelevant.

I'll make a more accurate prediction, in 10 years the Itanium will be viewed in the same light as the DEC Alpha and everyone will be using something else. Intel had to deliver Itanium as a marketable platform 2 years ago In order to make it a viable product. Itanium has already failed, the only reason it still exists at all is people trying to justify their professional judgment after better the farm on it. Billions have been wasted, don't you think that some Intel/HP $$$ executives would lose face if they admitted that they blew it?
