Actually, IIRC, Itanium evolved from Alpha, taking the best of its RISC features. The big difference between EPIC and RISC is that the burden of deciding which instructions to execute in parallel is shifted to the compiler. IMO, this is a drawback when considering dynamic branch prediction...it seems like an area where dynamic/JIT features of a VM will have a clear performance advantage over native-compiled code for an EPIC system, depending on the type of computation being done.
