SUN deserves a good position
in the market for its systems. SUN h/w used to be overpriced and underperforming, but now SUN has achieved an interesting spectrum of solutions. In my oppinion it should leverage Opterons and Hypertansport more and come up with designs of up to 8 to 16 dual-core processors.

UltraSparc still needs more work to achieve top single thread performance.

Nevertheless, SUN has been innovating in h/w (asynchronous logic circuits, proximity communication, etc.) and in s/w with Java and Solaris. It is remarkable that larger companies, such as Intel and HP, cannot come up with more innovative designs. It is also dissappointing that Intel did not stick to its own native 64-bit ISAs and had to start immitating AMD... IBM came up with a good processor (power) but it seems that they are not willing to pursue high-end processor designs as vigorously as before.

I am very curious to see how the market will react to the Niagara design...
