And the open source community is doing this via a number of
projects. It seems a waste of time re-implementing something
that Sun might release as open eventually (as they have with
many of their other technologies).

and accompanying compilers, etc. I doubt that you would do a
better job anyway, so what's your point?"

Yes but these VMs aren't open either (YET). The point is without
an open VM distributions don't bundle it, and those of us
working on the more unusual platforms don't have access to a
VM (particularly true for small qualities).

Has nothing to do with lock-in.

An open JVM would be good for Java, its users, and the open
source community. What benefits Java will benefit Sun, as they
could still release a licensed version (e.g. StarOffice and OOo)
