Macs are proprietary, and look at their massive market share...
Yep, I'm sure that no one can make money on service and support. The big money is always going to be in hardware sales. That's why they use terms like 'commodity pricing' to describe the price curve on hardware. And of course, that's why Apple is dominating the computer world with proprietary hardware designs, and IBM is so jealously holding onto their PC building business.

If someone says they are happy to run a 'free' piece of software or hardware without paid support with a contracted service level agreement, they are either a hobbyist, or a future candidate for commercial bankruptcy. And that is why the companies which are making money in IT are the ones selling expertise, not hardware.
