Maybe they should talk to...
Synthersizer manufacturer's...they managed this about 20 years
ago...it's called MIDI...using cheap 5 pin din connectors...of
course that didn't stop each manafucturer trying to cut every
other manafucturer out of the picture by implimenting their own
"system exclusive" codes...which led to General MIDI...because
of the mess of trying to configure/connect all this half
incompatable equipment...still at least now there is a
"standard"...err...sort of...
