Why is it that an externally purchased CMS system used at work and an on-line report card/marking system used by a (teacher) relative (both based on ASP.NET) are locked in to using the latest IExplorer on Windows XP? Other browsers and OSs need not apply.
I certainly can't comment on the design decisions made by other companies but I will share the experience I've had creating websites with Visual Studio.NET. While you can certainly create your own "controls", the ones that Microsoft ships will detect which browser your client is connecting with and will send the correct javascript and formatting options for that browser. This means that it is EXTREMELY easy to create firefox friendly website using Microsoft provided controls. That isn't to say that software developers may decide to code in IE only behaviour but the same holds for developers that decide to code in Firefox only behaviour.
I can also say that Microsoft's out of the box implementation of OWA (remote access to email/contacts/calendaring for Exchange) is 100% functional through Firefox because that is all I use at home.
I certainly won't apologize for many of Microsoft's decisions but when it comes to .NET, Microsoft has made it much easier to do cross platform development. We can't blame Microsoft if developers refuse to use the tools in a cross platform way. - Posted by: NonZealot Posted on: 11/30/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
