Legit question...

Why is it that an externally purchased CMS system used at work and an on-line report card/marking system used by a (teacher) relative (both based on ASP.NET) are locked in to using the latest IExplorer on Windows XP? Other browsers and OSs need not apply.

Is this a deliberate decision/option made by the programmers/IT or is it a proprietary/lock in issue because they're using MS-based technology?

Re the teacher software... previously the app (IIRC, "eTeacher") was local (client-based) and ran on Windows and Mac. It could be used anytime with little problem or hassles, simply send in your (Filemaker) file for processing, recording and storage.

Since going Internet-based (ASP.NET), nothing but problems... slow (especially at peak times when most needed) or broken Internet connections, lost (sometimes suddenly found) files, locked into IE & Windows, etc.

Seeing as Apple/Macs are relatively highly used in education, this switch crippled many teachers with Macs at home and overall, was not as easy or efficient to utilize.

Who does IT serve... itself (ease of setup, maintenance, job security) or the clients/users?

Just wondering.

(re the CMS... apparently there is a "large/sought after" client that is "demanding" Mac support so the CMS vendor is working feverishly on making their system Mac-friendly. So maybe it is a deliberate, conscious decision to lock out other non-MS choices.)
