So, you are suggesting
that the whoever determines what is to be done with the spent fuel is supposed to package it up into individual gift packages to place under people's bed? They don't do that with coal emissions, but you think that it is practical to that with the used nuclear fuel? I don't think that it is and if someone went to the trouble of putting it into tiny spoonfuls for each of the people so inclined to put it under their bed that the cost alone would negate any gain that you have from nuclear power.

The Soviet Union went nuclear in a big way back in the 50's and 60's, now what are they doing with their ageing nuclear fleet? Putting it under Putin's bed? happy I don't think so. Most of it is rotting in the North Sea if I recall correctly. Just think would have happened if the Soviet Union continued to build a nuclear fleet at the same rate that they had been building it, the North sea would have not been large enough. When you scale it up you can't handle it by placing it into Borosilicate glass and shoving it under a bed. The solution does not scale up well. And then there is that nasty little fact about half life. Spent nuclear fuel continues to be dangerous for thousands of years so it isn't going to go away after we die, our descendants need to continue to keep our and their own nuclear waste under their bed. Thinking long term (which seems to be a lost art in America these days) even your over simplified example becomes a much larger problem. Rather than just saying our ancestors will figure out a better way of dealing with this crap, perhaps we should learn to deal with before we start to scale up our use of it? If we could do that then perhaps while we are at it we can learn to deal with our national debt in the same manner.

That is not a very practical solution George. You and any other nuclear advocate needs to do a better job dealing with the waste before it becomes practical which may be why we continue to have such a huge investment in coal.
