RE: Great! Now here is my prediction
I agree, unless...

If Gateway wants to achieve its old stature next to Dell, then it needs to stop trying to be something its not. I own several Gateway PC's from when they were Gateway 2000, and at that time they rocked. Here's what they really need to do:

1) Drop all their non-PC related goods, or provide them only minimally. They'll never survive as a Consumer-Electronics company.

2) Upgrade their tech support. They use to have excellent tech support, but that went down the tubes. Hire Americans, and keep them in the US! Train them, Pay them Well, and Do your best to serve the customer. You'll find that you'll (a) start gaining & keeping more customers, and (b) start growing in profits once again.

3) Be what you are! Gateway is a PC business. It will always be a PC business in the mind of the consumer. Do what you do, do it well, and do nothing else. Nothing else will makes any company profitable.

4) Support more than strictly Intel. Get AMD, Transmeta, and other chip companies. Offer Linux, Corel Office, and alternatives to Microsoft as well! You'll find this is a part of the PC market not heavily touched that is just looking for a company to target it.

5) Stop trying to compete with the bottom line PC crap. HP/Compaq has crap PC's that are just a bit better than Packard Bells, Tandy's, and NEC's. eMachines has done a pretty good job, but they are just better supported low-end crap stuff. All these companies rely on heavy turn-over of their equipment to survive. (HP won't survive the PC business much longer. It's printers, scanners, and other stuff is what keeps them good.)

Gateway use to be about quality products. That's why I bought Gateway! That's why my Pentium II 233 is still running and plays DVD's just fine! If Gateway is to survive, then they need to return to making quality products. They need to return to making the best of the best.

p.s. I will be sending a copy of this to Gateway's CEO TW.
