Sounded typical to me.
Your experience sounds more like a home purchase rather than corporate. Something doesn't sound quite right.

The ordering process at Dell is pretty straight forward; and their corporate tech support is based in North America and uses reasonably knowledgeable staff. Their home consumer tech support is based in India though. That tech group knows how to tell you to reinstall Windows. After that, they're lost. Utterly worthless home consumer tech support.

Dell's internal hardware is no worse than IBM's; similar quality. Main differences are in the case and cosmetic issues.

BTW: Very foolish to let anyone else image the machines. We experimented with that, gave it up after six months due to too many problems. Utilities to move machine-to-machine aren't a big issue, third party stuff exists, no need to use IBM's.
