The way I see it is.
Gateway, Compaq, and dell started out making low cost, build to your needs computers that they sell with mail order. As they grew corporate thinking took over and they moved away from the very thing that created them (low cost computers built to your needs sold with mail order). Dell has managed to get a good reputation for quality, stuck with the mail order scheme, and expanded in to servers and other areas (even Linux). Compaq grew fast and started selling junk, made a huge mistake putting the bios on the hdd amongst other things, and in the end was bought by HP. Gateway stupidly (and I really mean it) opened up gateway stores. Now come on!! do you know how much overhead is involved with a store!! lets see, employees, rent, advertising, insurance.... bottom line, you can't compete in the mail order biz if you create a store front. I would also like to add that dumping the cow logo was also extremely stupid. They had a lot of recognition with that and now they have this lame logo that means nothing to anybody. e-machines is doing good because it created low cost computer in which it sold through other store fronts (not their own). Gateway needs to dump the stores and get back to basics. Quality, flexibility, good service, and mail order.
