Sad news
This is disappointing. eMachines provided two benefits:

1. Their low-cost machines put downward pressure on overall PC prices and forced Dell (and others) to introduce low-end lines for casual users.

2. Their machines were adequate for use as a second PC, primarily one used only for browsing or basic word processing. People could pick one up at the local electronics store for less than most new TV's.

If Gateway purchases eMachines, I would expect both of these benefits to go away. I suspect that most PC manufacturers are happy to see that eMachines is being chained to a sinking ship.
