You need to be informed
"This is an amazing discovery by Sun's research
scientists. Why, if they are correct, and we can shrink these
transistors and stuff, we might someday get eight flip-flops
in a single DIP package.
"

Your are not informed on the state of the art in chip design.
Although SUN has 1/50th of the resources that Intel has it
can still do R/D. The approach of asynchronous IC design
has been pioneered and promoted by SUN. They have also
been in the forefront in RISC designs in the not so distant
past. Although UltraSparc is not currently the sexiest of the
processors it is pretty decent. Intel is trying for 6-7 years
to at least come up with a decent 64-bit microprocessor.
ANd they still have a long way to go.

Besides SUN is very good at architecting large ccNUMAs
which Intel never managed to do and it is NOT going to.
They plan a four processor SMP for their Itaniums. They
know how much harder is to design a good SMP. If SGI was
not there with their Altix, Intel will have NO presence in
large SMPs. SUN has very solid OS designs, as well.
