I know lots of folks who buy their computers in pieces and put them together themselves. Mobo, CPU, memory, hard drive, case, etc...
I don't know a single person who has ever said, "Hey, I've gotten everything but the CPU now, let's go see if I can get it on Dell's site."
The fact that there's any demand for AMD CPUs on the Dell site speaks volumes, because it means that for every person who asked Dell for an AMD CPU, there were probably dozens who didn't even think to ask.
