It's about the interconnect, stupid.
HyperTransport is killing Intel. It's not just about the CPU.

Intel hasn't figured out their own high-speed chip interconnect, and they stubbornly won't use HyperTransport. Pair this with multiple processor cores that are hungry for memory bandwidth, and it's a double whammy.

Intel has stated they're having problems with on-die memory controllers. AMD has been doing it with HyperTransport for years now.

Intel's Netburst CPU architecture is at a dead-end and their idea for the 'new & improved' direction is to rehash a variant of the 386 core (Pentium M and Conroe). They admittedly are having difficulties in moving these architectures to 64-bit.

While Intel tries to figure out how they will compete, AMD will keep upping the speed of HyperTransport and their 64-bit chips while they keep adding processing cores to the silicon with an interconnect that can actually provide the memory bandwidth necessary to support the architecture. If you go to where the envelope is being pushed in the server world, the AMD Opteron is so far ahead it must be scary working at Intel or their preferred integrator...Dell.

Add to this mix that AMD is doing it with less power, producing less heat, and we get it for less money, and the sum of the equation is that Intel is in big trouble for quite some time to come.
