Apple released their 64bit dual processor G5 desktop
model first. That prompted AMD to release their 64bit
Athlon earlier then they planned.
The biggest difference is that the Apple offering retains it's
value longer than any Wintel model.
Basically, Intel has been so arrogant that they never even
saw the 64bit revolution coming. They must've figured that
they had consumers so snowed into believing the MHz
myth that no one would buy into the 64bit madness.
They failed to realize that consumers are fickle and that it
doesn't matter which measurement is increased, the
consumers will want it, because if it's a bigger number it
must be faster.
Heck, those G5s are flying off the shelves so fast Apple just
released the 64bit processor in there Xserve 1U rack mount
server. In fact, Virginia tech is going to upgrade their new
super computer (third fastest is the world, i believe) to the
Xserve, which you can read about here:
