This reminds me a bit of the old 8080; Zilog made the Z80 as an extended 8080 (a few tacked on 16 bit register pairs) and stole intel's market away... while intel moved to the incompatible 16bit 8086 instruction set - which went nowhere fast... with CPM/86.
Zilog then in a stunning move of forgeting what made them a sucess released their own instruction set incompatible 16bit processor- no-one bought it. They then scrabbled around coming up with a full 16 bit extension to the Z80.
Meanwhile and luckily for intel IBM chose the x86 architecture (in the 8088 8bit packaging) for their first PC.
Where are Zilog today? Still selling embedded Z80s I think.
Fortunately for the alphabet they failed to Tradmark the letter "Z" during their heyday or Sesame St would still be paying them a licence fee
