re: Intel plans demo of Opteron rival: CT
Just goes to show you that Intel made a mistake in assuming that everyone was going to jump on the 64 bit bandwagon just because they said to do so.

And that there isn't enough of a market for 64 bit stuff just yet. MOST small to midsize business' are happy with what they've got now. Only big corporations with massive databases and people doing scientific research that requires crunching huge volumes of numbers have a need for 64 bit hardware. Most applications that the average Joe will want to do (at THIS point in time, anyway) work just fine on existing hardware/software.

Intel's arrogance (or perhaps delusions of grandeur) cost them. AMD chose the smarter route - building the Opteron chip that offers a bridge to the 64 bit world. It, at least, will run 32 bit software natively. Now, Intel is over a year behind in releasing something comparable.

Computing has reached a plateau. Most common tasks - word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, etc... - can be done on older, "obsolete" hardware. There's very little gained in performance by having a 3 or 4 GHz CPU when a 400 MHz box will do the job in the same amount of time.
