AMD or Intel...which 64-bit chip will be best?
Who will make the best x86-64 chip?

AMD - designed their Opteron/Athlon 64 chips from the ground up to be a 64-bit x86 chip that is completely compatible with current 32-bit software. Notable features: hypertransport, Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process for reduced heat/power, integrated memory controller, 8 new registers as well as 16 SSE/SSE2 registers, triple-pipeline FPU for more processor operations at lower clock speeds. Early advocate for 64-bit x86 capabilities.

Intel - added 64-bit addressing on to their existing Pentium 4 chip which was already an overextended, overclocked version of their tired 'Pentium' design . Had to be dragged kicking and screaming to produce a 64-bit x86 chip and obviously greatly prefers the 'Itanium' platform where it does not face competition.

Notable features: even more pipeline stages, high heat dissipation, hyperthreading (HT), very high clock speeds.
