a small percentage?
I fix many problems, mainly with Dells, for some very large clients. I have personally changed out over 100 GX270 motherboards with popped caps this year alone.... (and its not time consuming, it takes about 10 minutes, then another 10 at most to get it running on the network again since they are using integrated NICs).

This is a major issue as about 85% of all GX270 that went through us has had capacitors pop. Its been bad enough that Dell has not been able to even get more replacemnet boards quickly, and have had to wait months for some to come in. The SX270s have this same problem.

GX280s on the otherhand, ive seen very few have capacitor problems, and this might be what Dell was really commenting to, as the GX270 hasnt been sold for awhile, even the GX280 has been replaced with a newer model.

Also, not mentioned here, there is a lot of Precesion 670s that also had this issue. I had a group of 40 people that all 40 of their 670s had blown caps even. I'm thinking it was more of a batch issue as they were all purchased at the same time. I've also seen a large number of 470s with bad caps, but they are basically the same motherboard as the 670 with a few slots and scsi controller not soldered on.

I dont see the problem stopping anytime soon. Everyone keeps trying to cut cost any way they can. They need to get a bit smarter on who they contract to. This really isnt totally Dells problem, though they should have takent he steps to fix it by now. Dell contracts out to another company to make these boards, they dont have any say on where the board manufacturer gets their parts. But someone needs to wake up and realize they are losing money in the long run by taking care of problems associated with saving a dollar per board to use cheaper, and less expensive, parts on them.

Nope, it is the cheap electrolite material making up the capacitors.  osreinstall | 10/31/05
