Cooling fans hooked directly
to the mainboard are what is responsible for blown capacitors. This is definitely an industry wide problem.

For quite some time, all PC's I assemble no longer have any fans running off of the main board power. I leave the sensor wire attached but power the fan directly from the PC's power supply. Since I have been doing this I have not had any capacitors blow.

The north bridge fan is one of the worst offenders. Assembly line building of PC's gives the consumer less than an optimized solution. Expect a lot of mainboards to be replaced by a lot of vendors. EXCEPT the PC's I have assembled.

The current draw of a cooling fan is simply too much for the small circuitry of a main board. This is great news for the small OEM that takes the extra time to make sure his customer gets a quality product. It's bad news for the Dell's and HP's that have been selling cheep PC's.
