We did not overcome them in a free market society. We overcame them by limiting the abuses of the "pure" free market by government action. An unregulated free market system inevitably produces abuses much like one where the balance of power swings too much towards the government. Consider that right now the Republican government we have wants to give over much of Medicare (their ideal being complete privatization) to HMOs and private insurance companies because they believe with a religious fervor that private companies are always more efficient. These private companies have an administrative overhead of 12-13%. Medicare currently has administrative overhead of 2-3%. They know this yet they claim that they want to turn billions of dollars over to private corporations that contribute big bucks to their campaigns in the name of improving efficiency. What's wrong with this picture.
