I believe in a free market society...
Ahh, the Free Market argument. If it's 'Free Market' it must be good. The Free Market gave us slavery in early 1800's, child labor in the late 1800's, and the trusts and robber barrons of the early 20th. The free market saw the removal of the Native Americans from their own homelands. The 'Free market' also saw the great middle class come out of the depression and spawned the current information age and allowed labor to demand greater benefits. And yes, labor overextended themselves when they had too much power. The Free Market is not a cure all utopia any more than marxism is. It is the responsiblilty of society to promote the welfare and well being of its people, not some virtual corporation. Corporations DO benefit society, but unchecked and unbalanced they can also create a great deal of fear, uncertainy and doubt (Enron ring a bell?). If you want to hide your head in the sand and not take responsibilty for the consequences of America's actions (both GOOD and BAD), you forget that we live in a world where dictatorships still exist, communism rules the largest population in the world (or are they now second?) and slavery still exists in Africa. Tell me again how a pure Free Market will solve all of these issues?
