The server approach is more reliable, and much cheaper
You slash the system administration costs by 12. Only one box to patch, update, clean of viruses, etc, instead of 12. And, your app would run faster in many cases since you have 2 high powered CPU instead of one dog. The chances of all users needing a CPU burst at the same time is nil. If your terminal goes down, you can move to another and log in. Local area networks are extremely reliable these days. And, if they architect it right, if a server fails, they can plug in a spare and be up and running fast. That assumes they don't store user files on the local box of course.

Here are some advantages:

1) One disk drive, not 12.

2) Memory for one OS and one copy of each application, not memory for 12 copies of each.

3) 1 box to patch, clean, and administer NOT 12.

4) Much more reliable. 1 reliable box, not 12 held together with duct tape and bailing wire.

Of course this is a great reason to take the OpenOffice plunge now, while you are still on Windows. That will make the switch to Linux and terminal servers for the masses very painless. LTSP is really the way to manage this, NOT virtual machines for each user. Especially VMWare is a poor choice.

I think the LTSP model is better. All applications share the memory for  DonnieBoy | 10/19/05
