Building Market Share...
Typical AMD mindset: If we build more chips at a faster rate, we automatically gain market share!

Sounds like AMD execs have been vacationing with the Enron and Author Anderson guys again!

Sounds to me like someone here was snoozing through Economics 101...

If you have a hot product that people want, but you can only produce a limited quantity, the price for said unit will be higher - simply because market forces will drive up the price. If you can raise the quantity you can produce, then the prices for said commodity will drop simply because there's more to go around.

Lower prices -> more interest -> more people buying -> more market share.

Secondly... If you read the article, you might have noted that AMD's new facility will be working on 300 mm wafers. Their old facilities use 200 mm wafers. Also, the new facility will be working with a smaller die - 65 nm instead of 90 nm - which means they can squeeze even MORE chips onto one wafer of silicon. And when production goes to 45 nm dies, that number will go up even higher.

This is called EFFICENCY. Efficency also translates to lower costs per unit - which leads us back to lower prices -> more interest -> more people buying -> more market share.

And for the record: It's ARTHUR Anderson - not Author.
