They didn't go quite the way you make it sound

At least for Bell Labs. They didn't "die", they were basicly "killed" by the Government.
Bell labs research money came from ATT. With the government forcing the break up of ATT,the money was no longer there (as it came from proffits off the company as a whole) as it was before.

IBM's research labs still have IBM's proffits to draw from. If IBM were forced to break up, you know their research labs would basiclly dissapear overnight,too.
