IBM's implementation record is far from good
Codd had to fight for years to get the relational model recognised.

When it was finally implemented we got the awful bodge that is SQL.

However even in this stunted form the relational model has been astoundingly successful (though to the enrichment of IBM's competitors as well as IBM).

Now IBM are indulging in the folly of X/Query it looks like any leadership they might have had in the data management area has been pretty much flushed down the pan.
