Good on Bell & Parc!!!
"And, unlike like the storied Bell Labs or Xerox PARC, IBM has striven to ensure that its research adds to the bottom line through enhanced products, services and intellectual property licensing."

Well, that's a minus for IBM, in my book. First of all, researchers need to be not constrained by what is likely to make money. Many breakthroughs have been in areas that would have been perceived as unlikely to be fruitful or profitable. Secondly, there should be some concept of "knowledge for its own sake" that drives research...applications of it will follow. And lastly, a sense of social responsibility often clashes with the forces that always drive for profit. Some things should be researched simply to contribute to the general good, not because they will be profitable. Or maybe, it should be noted, that the profits are less obvious, though not necessarily less in the long haul.
