Not a bad thing...
"Since when did maximizing bottom line profits become a BAD thing? That, I thought, was a recipe for corporate health and, in the aggregate, national health."

Maximizing bottom line profits is not a bad thing and I don't believe that is what I said. What you need to be clear on is the way in which these profits are maximized makes a great deal of difference. That, in my opinion, is where corporations can get into trouble. Regular media reports of a corporation laying off US workers and sending the jobs elsewhere (you can pick the country, I harbor no prejudice against any of them) does not win friends and influence people at home. Some potential results include reduced sales in the US due to negative publicity, Congressional investigation instigated by the constituents that are now unemployed, the added negative publicity of the Congressional investigations, knee-jerk trade law enactment that hurts competition for the corporation, and so on. None of these results would, in my opinion, add to the bottom line profits of in a long term, meaningful way. And, it is this short-sighted, take the money and run management mentality in some corporations that is hurting the bottom line for companies that aren't, can't, or won't outsource their work but their business is tied in some way to that of the short-sighted corporation.

Since this forum seems to enjoy analogies, here's one for you. Assume you have a hangnail on your right index finger. I take a knive and remove your right arm at the elbow. Now your hangnail problem has been resolved. Not exactly the recipe for your long term health.
