RE: Apple and open Standards?
>At best open protocols is all they support. Apple is a proprietary OS running on proprietary hardware. They are hardly an Open Source Champion.

While they may not be an open source 'champion', don't sell them short on the open source front, either.

OS X may be a proprietary operating system, but it is built on top of a very non-proprietary FreeBSD.

Darwin (OS X's open source twin) has been released to the open source community for years and gets updated along side version releases of OS X.

Apple has been tending to adopt open protocols for much of their goods lately, including MPEG4/AAC.

Safari is not only based on KHTML/KJS/KDE, but when Apple completes improvements to it, they release them back into the open source community and all improvements go straight into their own WebCore and JavascriptCore development tools for use by folks screwing around with Darwin.

I'm not trying to portray Apple as a group of open source saints or anything, but to say all they do at best is support open protocols is way off base. They've accepted help from the open source community and they've contributed back, a lot more than many other major corps out there. Have they been the most generous corp out there as far as open source goes? No. Definitely not. They've still got a lot of business to run and they're still going to keep a lot of things proprietary and under wraps. That being said, they've been a contributor and that alone is much more than many others can say.
