When I come home I go straight to my desktop to do some ******** gaming or check email. Even though I can probably play a game or check email
on a mobil or windows ce device I wouldn't want to for the same reasons you outlined. Another thing, PCs are becoming more full-featured and cheaper by the minute, all the more reasons to have one.

What I see happening in the future is the merging of the PC / tv / stereo into one entertainment center. And this will happen in parallel with the merging of PCs and appliances, like the refrigerator, stove, etc.
The desktop aint going nowhere!!!! In fact it's gonna be everywhere!
