It is a lot easier to lump a phone and folding keyboard..
than to lump a laptop. The amount fo data that can be stored on a phone keeps going up, besides which some can do Word and Excel, and fit almost completely in your hand. This can be a lot better than lumping a laptop to some place, having it stolen or misplaced and not being able to work. A small device about the size of a phone, a folding keyboard or perhaps a Blackberry or a Nokia 9x00 can be more useful and convenient than a full machine.

Some people love to haul 5lbs of hardware with them everwhere they go, my graphics workstation (an IBM ThinkPad with a 1600x1200 screen, Wi-Fi, RJ-11 and RJ45) weighs in at about 10lbs (2nd battery or spindle installed). A smartphone or Blackbery fits in my pocket, is at or less than 8 oz, lasts for hours on a charge and is easier to store (unless you are into lumping computer bags).

As per Unix or Linux, my laptop boots boot Linux and Windows (maybe BSD one of these days), but that does not mean that I want to be lumping it or some other laptop with me when a phone is just more convenient! The only problem that may come up (because Americans love to live far from cell towers) is coverage, but the data can be stored on chips (SD or CF) which is also more convenient!
