Persistence
I think Apple's success is because of its persistence. They release new product after new product after new product each a little better than the last and even when they don't do so well they just continue relentlessly.

That persistence creates confidence that the product will be around in a few years and so people are then prepared to switch. I don't expect Java desktop to pay off big without another 10 years of upgrades under its belt.
