- 'Tried and Proven' approach
-
WHat should we do, what should we do? Just make he clock faster: cut the pipeline into smaller and thus more numerous stages and put more on-chip cache.
Who on this earth believes that a 30 stage pipeline can have benefits? If you have NO hazards (data, structural, control) you can retire more instructions. There is still HIGHER overhead/stage so the apparent speed of the system is higher but less efficient. But what happens when an interrupt occurs or a mispredicted branch? Or a fault of some sort? Wait until you flush the pipeline then wait until it is reloaded.
This 'news' is really olds and really boring. For sure though 30 stage pipeline is a loughning matter
