There are WISPs (wireless internet service providers) rolling this out right now in my area. Intel may need a year or two to get up to speed but other manufactures have product going out the door.

The products have been tested, meet the existing 802.16a standard, and were selected by a very conservative, well respected local telco as the technology to bet on in the future. So much so they plan to replace their existing customer DSL lines.

According to their head of technology, they believe WiMAX is a better solution than the constant upgrading of the existing infrastructure and associated costs of buried "wire/cable/fiber".

While the line of sight problem associated with 802.11 isn't totally removed, it's been reduced to the point of dropping the requirement for antennas and complicated cabling. The end user simply places a small subscriber unit (box) near an outside wall and install the software on the machine (Windows and Linux) and you are off and running. Well, after some security set up that is.

So far all I have seen working was a test installation with the subscriber unit located about 1.5 miles from the main transceiver and it worked a treat. This was in what I would call an urban area as it was mostly single family homes with a few businesses in the area. There were no real obstructions or reflection objects between the two points but it certainly wasn't the traditional line of sight install either.

Construction starts with in the next 30 days or so and I'll be watching to see if the promise, and the delivery on the promise, are the same thing.
