It is good for ALL that someone is working on
alternative processor architectures. The Ultra needed a performance boost in the last 6-7 years.

Power 5 is maybe the best currently high-end processor that has future. But with the sagging interest on Itanium, IBM wouldn't care to keep improving it. The end result? Another 7 years of bad fortune, errrhhhmm, I meant x86-64. I like opterons, but they ARE x86!!!!!! Please give us a break already. Gee the x86 is ending up being the COBOL of h/w!

Nevertheless, I admire SUN for their insistence in R/D ing their own processor technologies and their resistance to going whole-sale to x86 and the high unit-count markets.

I hope that they will get rewarded for their hard work and for their sticking with basic principles of improving technology.

Then you take a look at other companies with multi-billion income and tax-breaks and you see that they cannot even put together a PC os .... deplorably pathetic.
