The problem is
with the security aspect and NOT with the ability to do this. Accessing a server from anywhere is a well-known activity. Having a server automatically update is also well-known. Being able to selectively give people access to a server is well-known (but not really that easy). If you want to give your mother access to photos on your server NO PROBLEM! Just organize ALL of your data, create an account for your mother, and then set up all of the security configs to make sure that mom ONLY looks at CERTAIN photos and NOT at your finances (or other things). And when she talks to a friend and THEY want to see the photos, you need to create an account . . .

Basically you need to be a system admin to control access to servers. Anything less and you start getting into compromises (that you don't want). Ignorance is bliss and systems administration is pure hell . . .
