"No hardware, I notice. That may be accurate."
It is becoming increasingly difficult to justify SPARC's premium
for all but specialist markets, especially with OpenSolaris'
support for x86.
"So Sun can live only by becoming the third competitor in
commercial Linux after Red Hat and SuSE. Maybe second, if
Novell takes SuSE down with it."
You're assuming the failure of OpenSolaris, I'm not. However,
Sun would make a very good Linux competitor. The key to all
distribution sellers is to pick a market, and there's tremendous
opportunities yet to be identified and looked after. I'm not a fan
of the present general commercial distributions.
"Saying a company must rely on open source to survive is not an
optimistic prognosis."
Selling services on top of open source solutions is a good
model. Sun has the resources (both financial and personnel) to
make a great Linux company.
Lets be honest, all *nix producers have been riding on the back
of open source products their entire lives (Solaris' heritage
anyone?). - Posted by: Richard Flude Posted on: 09/14/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
