When are people willing to "make the leap"?
For any organization satisfied with the current situation, the motto may be If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Microsoft is not just its own software, but gains from being the center of a galaxy of developers. This is a point Mr. Murphy seems unwilling to acknowledge in his Why oh why does Windows win? articles, but we know it's essential to their success.

(Some have said there's a black hole at the center of many/most/all galaxies, but Microsoft is the opposite, able to shine on all the stars.)

Worthy as it may be, this approach means they have to wait for agreement. Might not be as stultifying as so-called "standards", which are based on the tolerance of the most slothful member of a committee or the attitudes of those set in their academic and Unix ways, but makes any technology decision by Microsoft political.

The value of the ecosystem is far greater than that of any new technology. I think you have a long wait, until Microsoft can assure almost complete backward compatibility added to the "new" Windows.
