The downside of building ecosystems.
Is the fact they are all become out dated at some point and will be abandoned. Consider the ecosystem that surround the horse as the primary mode of transportation. One could look at what is happening with POTS lines this very day as we all shift to digital lines. (We get to watch it as surly as our fathers, fathers watched the horse be replaced.)

Heck, just consider how the PC has been a part of business for only 20 years and changed every thing. In fact the entire shift to computers in business wasn't all that long ago. No industry in history has moved at the speed the computing industry has. Both in capability and in change.

One would have to reasonably expect it will reach the end of the current life cycle at the same break neck speeds it has always shown. I have no way to tell if the ideas Murph put forth are in fact the ones that will make it happen, but I am certain it will happen.

Just one last thought. Microsoft went with the cell CPU (XBox) for a reason and I believe that reason to be, keeping thier finger on what it is doing and wqhere it's going. Consider this, if you were MS wouldn't there be a HUGE value in starting with a clean slate? Drop all the legacy support and start building "The next Generation"? Not dropping what they have, but providing (driving?) the next big thing when people are ready to make the leap...
