A compelling product...
In the article, an analyst states:

"I don't see how they get there, honestly, without doing more in the Linux and Microsoft space, which are the volume operating systems in the x86 market,"

Another states that Sun's offering isn't really compelling because there just isn't that much of a difference between one x86 server and another.

Well, I don't think these guys are paying close enough attention. For better or worse, Sun is providing a unique option to customers. They are the only hardware vendor that is shipping both a hardware AND software platform that they have control over.

Technically anyone could be shipping their servers with Solaris, but few if any will choose to do so (and if they do, they still won't be viewed as the "experts" on Solaris like Sun is).

So in my mind, it comes down to Solaris as the value add for Sun. Solaris has been the most popular UNIX of all time. Linux is great, but Solaris provides an extra measure of stability, scalability, and maturity -- Windows as a server platform isn't even in the runnings for serious applications.

From the user's perspective, UNIX is UNIX. Solaris and Linux are very similar to use and administrate. Anyone using Linux servers can easily bring Solaris in to their environment (and they may just find that Solaris is better). Still, if customers insist on running Linux, you can run Linux on the Sun hardware just as easily as Dell, or IBM, or HP.

Anywho, just my $0.02.
