What so "less effective" about diesel???
You have to increase compression ratio in gasoline fuel engine to get the combustion the same way it is done in diesel. No philosophy there so what is moderate compression I do not know. Now the problem with that is that it is less controllable with gas.

Diesel is more efficient period. It had in the past problem of particle polution, but not anymore. In Europe there are cars that have filters for diesel that do not require service anymore.

An if you wondered, diesel comes back to racing. Le Mans already hosts those cars and gives preference. Peugeot works on environment friendy fuel engine working like diesel.

Overall there is no diesel engine. You have to change yyour terminology. There is spark ignited combution engine and self-ignited combustion engine. The fuel you use in those is another stry and today you can use any fuel in both types of engines. It is just matter of engine design and enrichment of fuel.

Good description of that (no do not look into your funky magazines like Car&Driver) you can find in magazines like Race Car Engineering and Race Engine Magazine. yes they talk about realistic cars and engines since all technology development is done on race tracks (not always the USA though since NASCAR technoly development is close to null comparing to F1, BTCC, WRC e.t.c.)
