Exactly theft by scanning and copying methods!
It was so popular in eastern Europe that BMW had to come up with dynamic code change and syncing between key and car. Today it is so popular.

Scanning was as easy as sitting in a car with a scanner and waiting for a sucker who wanted to show off with his/her car by opening its doors from far distance. That was the reason some manufacturers limited distance of key transmitter to be able to open car from only a few inches so transmitter was weak enough to be not interceptable by strong receivers.

With straight USB drive it would be extremely easy to thief to get a copy. And trust me those are not regular IT professionals just with wide knowledge. I personally met a freak who told: "show me the car I would not be able to open"

The only hope aginst such individuals is Lo-Jack and very quick car/property tracking reaction.

BTW. Some freaks may use scanning method to get your access to ATM. There were incidents in some countries when survailence camera was blined and another camera mounted to watch hands of a ATM customer typing PIN while ATM card acceptor had very thin device mounted over it to read the codes. The copies of ATM cards were made then and PINs were known. So how easy would be to catch guys scanning/ Well if you were fast enough and knew where they were. They were sitting in their car not neccessarily in banks parking lot and receiving data from transmitter mounted in the bank. A lot of money was stolen this with fake ATM cards this way.

So do not trust any embedded devices on your ATM even if they may look like bank installed. Also do not brag like a moron that you can open or strat your car from home while for some it can be a matter of stealing it for fun. Police would help? Yea... but until you rcover your property it could be damaged or partially lost. This is where you should be sensitive and excercise suspicions.
