The area of disagreement is your perceived 'flaw' in itanium. IMHO, Itanium was designed for big iron - not general purpose computing as you state. Clearly, Intel wanted to go down to workstations, but that is not gen purpose computing space (perhaps this is a semantics conflict).

Intel designed Itanium to compete with Sun/Sparc and IBM/Power - in part to prevent those architectires from encroaching on the PC space. WHat has made Itanium disappointing in the market has everything to do with the Moores Law as it applied to the X86 space. At some point, it became good enough/chea enough for many high peforamnce needs.
