I don't diss the compiler, I just point out that trying to take a current language and translate it to a parallel machine is not going to work.

I started doing compiler work around the time of the Vax. I have never seen anyone get the level of performance for common programs, that has been claimed possible by the Itanumm team. The only places you get that performance is in highly parallel algorithms, which most computing is not.

My complaint with the Itanium is simple, it might be a great chip for a super computer but it was supposed to be a general purpose computer. The needs are different, Intel made a set of flawed architectural decisions, and the Itanium's poor showing in the marketplace is the result.
